This study aims to make best use of the newly opened Academia Sinica Digital Humanities Research Platform and the exemplary digital archives of the Institute of Taiwan History to explore the social network and geographical distribution of local elites in central Taiwan during the Japanese colonial period. By means of digital humanities tools in analyzing rich texts such as from the Diary Knowledge Bank and Taiwan Sotokufu Personnel Directory, the project will pay special attention to the following two questions: 1. How did social networks affect and shape elites' political, economic and cultural actions? 2. Are there any particular regional features among the local elites in central Taiwan?
