This year, an impressive seam of events is dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the Institute of History and Philology (IHP), Academia Sinica. The Academia Sinica Center for Digital Cultures creates a 3D zoo at an exhibit about the digital archives of the IHP and an AR installation of ancient animals in collaboration with the Museum of the IHP.

Since 1984 when the project of automatizing Chinese-language textual corpora in history was launched, the IHP has been maintaining several digital archives and cyberinfrastructure for over three decades. Canonical texts, imperial archives, and myriad artifacts become available online. To tell the story of digitizing cultural heritage, the IHP will host "Digital Archives at the Institute of History and Philology" on October 22 and 23 to display the latest development of its databases and the new platform for computational textual analysis.

In maximizing its forte in digital application, the Academia Sinica Center for Digital Cultures (ASCDC) partners with the project titled "Innovating the Digital Archives of Archeological Data" under "The IHP's Project to Digitally Innovate Academic Settings" to present a 3D zoo. This zoo offers a virtual close-up of the animal motif of a selection of ancient artifacts through holographic projection and audio-narrative. Standing Owl, Bridle Ornament with Turquoise, Gu-Shaped Cup, and Inscribed Deer Skull will be there to greet you. In manipulating the touchpad, you are free to contemplate the trove of antiques in 360 degrees

"AR Roaming in the Museum's Zoo" features AR installation built by ASCDC and the Museum of the IHP, which specializes in Yin-Shang antiquities. The "museum's zoo" points to the fact that animal motifs dominate objects excavated from the Ruins of Yin: they decorate artifacts; their bones abound in the ruins, and the oracle bones made frequent reference to the game brought back by the kings of Shang civilization. To effectuate roaming proper, the exhibit uses ARKit 2 of iOS along with 3D animation and audio-narratives to bring ancient animals back to life. Visitors can not only admire these digital avatars but also have a closer look at the panoply of animal imagery.
