The Forestry Bureau of Taiwan has been building up a data depository about Taiwan’s biodiversity over the years. The project of Taiwan Encyclopedia of Life jointly run by the Academia Sinica Center for Digital Cultures and the Forestry Bureau has accumulated 21,642 entries of species so far, reaching one third of the 59,200 species hitherto known in Taiwan, thanks to the effort of taxonomists and the network of free scholars and aficionados. There are over 24,000 images labeled as Creative Commons enclosed in the Encyclopedia.
At the conference, you will get to know that there lies an array of possibilities for the appliance of scientific data contained in this encyclopedia outside the framework of education and roadkill prevention – it is a source for creating environmental art as well. All is welcome to learn more about our project combining academic scholarship and crowdsourcing!
