| Overview |
This project aims at establishing Geographical Information System of Taiwan’s tea plantations to explore related historical and social science research. Tea industry has been an important agriculture sector in Taiwan. Beginning from late Qing, tea was one of the key export items until mid-1980s when Taiwan’s teas could not compete in the world markets. But Taiwan’s tea production did not diminish; domestic consumption began to support her tea industry, which has remained an important sector since. Other than the issue of export, impacts of industrialization, urbanization, domestic consumptive market, development of new tea plantations, competition among temperate agricultural items, and global climate changes all appear in geographic space. The establishment of GIS will allow us understand and study these changes from the perspective of geographic space. Information collected will also allow us to present tea related political economy as well as transformation and flow of the taste-scape of Taiwanese teas; it will also serve as basic data for National Comprehensive Development Plan. Based on this research, PI will make a few application maps and establish a website to provide research result for public uses. |
