Overview

"Migration" is an essential characteristic of China’s early medieval period (late third through sixth centuries). This project aims to establish a quantitative model of textual narratives by using Academia Sinica’s Digital Analysis System for Humanities and related digital tools in order to analyze migration narratives in the standard histories compiled in the the period under examination. The project brings digital tools and methods to the study of the humanities. With the help of multi-layered historical maps and timelines, the project examines the characteristics of migration narratives in different genres from three perspectives, i.e., migration narrative types, social networks, and migrant images. It also compares and visualizes differences and similarities among the migration narratives in different time periods and areas to analyze political legitimacy, ethnic imagination, and historical memory. In short, the project uses the lens of “the movement of people” to understand time-space dynmaics of migration. We can see the diversity and complexity of society and culture at that time and historical changes through migration narratives, thereby contributing to the filed of early medieval China.
