Overview

The "Academia Sinica Center for Digital Cultures" (ASCDC) was formerly the "Digital Archives Center," set up to implement the "Taiwan e-Learning & Digital Archives Program" (TELDAP). On February 1, 2013, in order to promote Academia Sinica's long-term digital humanities research and digital cultural innovation, the Center was reorganized into the cross-disciplinary, cross-institutional "Center for Digital Cultures." Its primary mission is to assist the digital turn in humanities research.

The main challenges that face humanities scholars are 1. Extracting data from sources, and 2. Application of analytical methods.ASCDC disseminates and accumulates texts and images from various historical and civilizational contexts, and carries out structured collection and organization. Furthermore, it also provides tools convenient for ordering and assembling data, enabling researchers to more effectively handle diverse, large quantities of text or images, and thereby develop research topics that humanities scholars were previously unable or unwilling to explore.

How to establish organic links between research and local society, and to interact with related academic fields worldwide on a level playing field, are also new challenges that ASCDC is actively engaging with. To achieve the objectives mentioned above, ASCDC's main project plans to conduct four major initiatives in 2021:

(1) Linked Knowledge Bases for Digital Humanities: An integrated project carried out under Academia Sinica's Humanities Division institutes and the Center. Through specific research subjects, digitized historical materials will be systematically integrated to enable scholars to carry out online analysis and application.
(2) Innovative Cyberinfrastructure and Digital Tools: Digital core technologies and systems will be researched and developed in order to carry out data utilization via extraction and analysis from text and image sources.
(3) Academic Research in the Digital Humanities: Academia Sinica scholars will be encouraged to launch individual experimental research projects based on utilization of "content" and "methods" from the previous two initiatives.
(4) Outreach Initiatives: Publication and Exhibition: Through both physical and digital publishing, humanities research will be presented in diverse fashion.

Core work objectives include the research and development of digital humanities tools and technologies, development of digital museums, Linked Open Data (LOD) research and practice, publication and book fair operations, database operation and maintenance, strengthening of international connections and collaboration, etc. Open calls for proposals are also held for "Digital Humanities Research Project" subprojects. Through these proposals from both institutes and individual researchers, we jointly advance Academia Sinica's research in the field of digital humanities, and establish digital humanities knowledge bases.
