Overview

Since its establishment in 1955, the Institute of Modern History, Academia Sinica has focused on the collection of archives and materials. This covers the collection and reorganization of government departments' archives and the promotion of oral history, with the purpose of serving as a strong foundation for the study of modern history. The Institute of Modern History's Archives is known for its complete collection of diplomatic and economic archives. It is furthermore trying to extend the concept of open applications to social and cultural fields. Coupled with the collection of folk materials in recent years, and the study and exploration of the research fields of the Institute's scholars, the added value of the archives tends to be diverse, and the research in the government-industry-university-institute fields is more influential. In recent years, the Archives has actively participated in ASCDC's "Digital Collection of Modern Diplomatic Archives" (2015), "Digital Collection of Modern Diplomatic and Economic Archives" (2016) and "Digital Collections and Additions of Modern Economic Archives and Added Value Application Plan" (2017-2018). At present, the results of its participation are quite good. Under the support of ASCDC, the Archives is continuing its proposal for a two-year project plan on "Post-war Rural Demobilization and Reformation of Its Resources" (2019-2020). Both the digital output and the post-set data reached their set targets in the first half of 2019. Visual modules for "post-war China's resource map" and a "talent database" have also developed preliminary prototypes. Based on this, the digital value of the "Rural Demobilization Committee's Archives" will continue to be added next year, and the "Resource Map" and "Technology Talents" will be strengthened to meet the needs of collaborative researchers. Traditional archive content descriptions will be used in the application of big data analyses. In addition to covering the distribution of materials in various provinces and regions in China after the war, the Rural Demobilization Committee's Archives contains information on natural resources, the rise and fall of industries, agricultural promotion, and talent mobility. In the second year of the project, the research team and colleagues will invest in archival research and description respectively. Analyzing the data fields will allow annotation of meaningful keywords, contacts, geographic information, etc. in the archives. In this way, Linked Open Data (LOD) will be applied. The project is ultimately attempting to present the resource maps and social network analysis of the provinces, counties, and cities in modern China on a temporal axis, so as to verify the changes of people, things, and objects in peace and wartime, looking forward towards more progressive methodology beyond traditional quantitative history and e-textual research. Digital value-adding goals are: collections, teaching, research, and presentation. In the future, this project is expected to be developed into a more mature knowledge base with tools beyond social network analysis and GIS integration.
