The Research Museum of Biodiversity Research Center, Academia Sinica (BRCAS) houses a wealth of biological specimens collected by generations of biodiversity researchers of the institute. These precious biological collections not only are important research materials, but also lifetime dedication of researchers’ academic career. Studying researchers’ collecting history provides a unique opportunity to understand the development of their academic career, providing examples and role models for young-generation scientists. Dr. Ching-I Peng, retired Research Fellow and Director of BRCAS Research Museum, passed away in May, 2018. Dr. Peng is a world recognized plant taxonomist. He worked tirelessly since joining Academia Sinica, contributing greatly not only in plant systematic studies, but in promoting the national-wide effort of digitizing our biological collections and publicizing biodiversity knowledge. Dr. Peng served in the editorial board of the Flora of Taiwan, 2nd edition, deployed resources to conduct thorough botanical inventory and build up database of plant diversity. Dr. Peng also organized numerous international symposia, bringing novel and creative ideas to the academic communities in Taiwan. In recent decades, Dr. Peng devoted fully into the studies of Begonia, publishing more than 75 scientific publications in various the subjects of Begonia and describing ca. 100 new Begonia species. Through international collaboration and extensive fieldwork across China and SE Asia, Dr. Peng built BRCAS’s experiment greenhouse as one of the largest living collections of Begonia, serving not only hub for Begonia research but the essential refuge of Begonia germplasm preservation. To continue and exalt Dr. Peng’s legacy, we propose to portray Dr. Peng’s academic career through digital museum developed by Center of the Digital Culture, Academia Sinica. We will establish biography of Dr. Peng through digitized images of herbarium specimens, photographs of fieldwork, relevant literature, and related materials. This will be the first online exhibition portraying a researcher of Academia Sinica. We believe the story of Dr. Ching-I Peng’s legacy will inspire generations of scientists to come.
