Overview

Academia Sinica Center for Digital Cultures (ASCDC) was formerly known as the Digital Content & Technology Center, a division of the Research Center for Information Technology Innovation (CITI) from 2007 to 2013. It was responsible for leading and conducting a national project titled “Taiwan e-Learning and Digital Archives Program” (TELDAP, 2008-2012). Since the reorganization that gave ASCDC its current shape on February 1, 2013, the Center aims to bear the torch of engineering the infrastructure for digital cultures and carry on the legacy of digital archiving initiated in the 1980s. Open access and cross-disciplinary co-creation are two of its guiding principles in translating academic findings and cultural contents into a creative and innovative framework.

Main objectives:

  1. Preserve, transmit, and create cultures through digital means.
  2. Maximize digital technology to multiply research materials, ameliorate research environment, and promote the study of the Humanities.
  3. Explore the relationship between digital technology and human civilization. The core tasks are: expanding digital archives, pioneering digital technology, driving research in digital humanities, maintaining the legacy of digital cultures, and connecting to the international community. Strategically speaking, academic research is prioritized so long as it keeps in touch with cultural preservation, industry growth, and social impact. Its praxis- and product-driven projects should live up to the needs of the user, and our products are to integrate digital contents and digital technology.

In hopes of realizing these goals and contributing to the “democratization” and “globalization” of digital cultures, we are running a number of projects aside from general maintenance: The Open Museum, IT maintenance, Digital Humanities Research Platform, Digital Publication Platform, Broadcast Station for Digital Cultures, Linked Open Data, Innovative Application, and International Connections etc.
