Toward Open Museum—Academia Sinica Biodiversity Research Museum Specimen Collection Management System 2.0 and Research and Conservation of Taiwan’s Marine Ecosystem

Basic information
Project identifier AS-ASCDC-115-201
Conducted by Biodiversity Research Center
Director
Overview

This project focuses on two main pillars:

(I) Upgrading the Specimen Management System

To address the outdated system currently used by the Biodiversity Research Museum of the Biodiversity Research Center, Academia Sinica (BRCAS), the project will develop the "Academia Sinica Biodiversity Research Museum Specimen Collection Management System 2.0 (i.e., BRMAS 2.0)" This system will provide customized interfaces and functionalities to enhance data structural integrity and integrate with the "Open Museum" platform to facilitate data sharing and technical collaboration.

Animal Specimens:

The focus for 2026 is to organize, transfer, and import insect specimen data into Management System 2.0, while developing the management interface and functionalities for insect specimens. Establish an insect specimen catalog and management system; the target is to complete the transfer and import of 15,000 insect specimen records.

Plant Specimens:

The project will continue the digitization of PPI specimen images and the creation of 5,000 specimen labels, and will initiate the transcription of these records into structured, system-compatible text by relevant personnel to facilitate future retrieval and enhance data usability. In addition, outreach efforts will be strengthened to encourage other herbaria and specimen collections to upload and share their specimen data, thereby expanding open data access and collaboration.

(II) Promoting Research Outcomes and Conservation Education

Through the diverse functionalities of the Open Museum platform, this project will showcase Taiwan's achievements in biodiversity and marine conservation research, connect with global trends, and advance conservation education and sustainable development.

The thematic exhibition planning will center on Dr.Ming-Shiou Jeng, a researcher at BRCAS, highlighting his scholarly contributions to marine biodiversity and conservation.

2026 Exhibition: The exhibition is expected to focus on topics related to marine ecosystem conservation and environmental change, including the reappearance of dugongs, perspectives on algal reef conservation, biological resource surveys of Taiping Island, and marine debris investigations in Dongsha Atoll National Park.

This project will use these exhibitions as a platform to deepen public understanding of scientific education and environmental conservation, promote "biodiversity mainstreaming," and make meaningful contributions to the goals of sustainable development.
