Overview

This project aims to leverage the organic nature of digital reading, which manifests through the use of multiple media, to introduce new models for academic publishing. By enabling the seamless transition between panoramic views and specific points, and connecting internal and external databases, the project seeks to guide users in utilizing these databases and digital tools. This approach breaks the constraints of traditional print media's static and linear reading experience, allowing users greater freedom to select and link data, and even to generate new forms of knowledge independently.

To effectively support digital publishing and reading, the project plans to establish a "Chinese Medieval Literature and Cultural Database." This system is built upon the applicant's long-standing research in digital humanities and integrates concepts from digital humanities research platforms and open museum digital repositories. The system will consolidate previous research outcomes into a comprehensive management system covering seven key components: text management, book management, event management, character management, place name management, time management, and article management. It will also adhere to the FAIR principles of scientific data and develop new models for digital utilization.

In the first year, the project will focus on integrating the "Peripheral Narratives of the Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties Database," the "Medieval Chinese Exile Narratives Database," and the "Liu Yu's Journal of campaign Database" into the Chinese Medieval Literature and Cultural Database. Additionally, the project will plan the digital publication of two academic papers: " Blessed by the Three Spiritual Realms: The Writing and Interpretation of the Sacred Landscape of Liu Yu's Inspection Expedition to the West" and " Visible and Invisible War: Records, Rhapsodies, and Liu Yu's Expeditions to the North." These publications will serve as a precursor and test for larger-scale digital publications in the following year. Moreover, the project will launch a digital exhibition titled "Wars and Exile" in its first year, which will explore the historical events of Liu Yu's Journal of campaign to the West. The exhibition will utilize emerging digital reading technologies to recreate ancient, dispersed texts and reconstruct the cultural context of Liu Yu's Journal of campaign. It will also connect to the database and incorporate emerging generative AI technologies, providing a comprehensive overview of the peripheral world and the shifting dynamics during the Wei, Jin, Southern, and Northern Dynasties.
