Overview

Approved by the 15th Conference of Parties (COP 15) of the Conventional of Biological Diversity (CBD), the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (K-M GBF) aims to achieve the “global vision of a world living in harmony with nature by 2050”. As the major research organization of biological diversity of Taiwan, Biodiversity Research Center, Academia Sinica (BRCAS) not only pursues academic excellence but is also responsible for promoting biodiversity mainstreaming. Constituted by fish collection (ASIZ-F), zoological collection (ASIZ), and botanical collection (HAST), the Biodiversity Research Museum (BRMAS) of BRCAS houses 60,224 animal specimens and 145,880 plant specimens, representing a major natural historical collection and the largest fish specimen collection of Taiwan. Beginning in 2023, BRMAS collaborates with the Center of Digital Culture, Academia Sinica (ASCDC) to develop the ‘Academia Sinica Biodiversity Research Museum Specimen Collection Management System 2.0 (i.e., BRMAS 2.0)’. By designing a user-friendly interface, BRMAS 2.0 has facilitated the transfer of the metadata of ASIZ-F and the paleontological data to the Open Museum. However, despite a considerable progress, BRMAS 2.0 needs to be improved and optimized continuously to meet the demands of the diverse biological collection managed by BRMAS staff. In this 3-year project, we propose to further enrich the ‘digital repository’ of BRMAS’s Open Museum by incorporating all zoological collection into BRMAS 2,0. Additionally, ASCDC will assist the connection between BRMAS and HAST 2.0, an updated managing system of HAST. Furthermore, we will facilitate the incorporation of the Herbarium of National Pingtung University of Science and Technology (PPI) into Open Museum, a step that aims to establish a unified online platform for searching all biological collection of Taiwan. As BRMAS moves toward to become an Open Museum, the rich collection in the ‘digital repository’ will enable us to fully utilize the tools and services developed by ASCDC. In 2024, we will continue to explore Dr. Kwang-Tsao Shao’s contribution to the conservation of global marine biodiversity. In 2025 and 2026, we will curate several exhibitions that highlight the work and contribution of Dr. Ming-Shiou Jeng, including the ecophysiology of the crab species Xenograpsus testudinatus that abounds around the sulphur-rich hydrothermal vents of Guishan Island, the new classification and conservation of the precious coral Coralliidae, the reef-building in the fleshy octocoral genus Sinularia, issues of ocean litter, biological survey of Taiping Island, as well as the promoting of the establishments of Dongsha Atoll National Park and South Penghu Marine National Park.
