The 77th Frankfurt Book Fair will take place from October 15th to 19th, 2025. Academia Sinica is once again presenting 15 newly published academic and popular science works at the Taiwan Pavilion. The themes cover diaries and oral histories related to Taiwan studies, as well as politics, war, Confucianism and the Classics, artificial intelligence, and aging society, showcasing the Academy’s rich and diverse research achievements while expanding international publishing networks.

Since it was founded in 1949, the Frankfurt Book Fair has attracted publishing and creative industry professionals, media, writers, and cultural enthusiasts from nearly 100 countries, totaling hundreds of thousands of participants each year. It is not only the world’s largest book exhibition and copyright trading event but also a trendsetter in addressing issues such as generative AI and digital publishing. This year, the Taiwan Pavilion is again organized by the Taiwan Creative Content Agency (TAICCA), with the Philippines as the Guest of Honor.

This year, Academia Sinica once again participates under the coordination of Academia Sinica Press, presenting 15 titles that span from Taiwan to East Asia, from antiquity to the present, and encompass both micro-level personal experiences and macro-historical perspectives. A large portion of the collection features diaries and oral histories that vividly reflect the feelings of those directly involved. These include three works published by the Institute of Taiwan History: The Prison Diary of Liu Song-Fu, which documents the imprisonment and subsequent experiences of an executive member of the Erlin Sugarcane Farmers Movement; Things about Women: Life Stories of Elderly Females in Taiwan, which narrates the life stories and social roles of elderly women in Taiwan; and Studying Taiwan Before Taiwan Studies: American Anthropologists in Cold War Taiwan, which records how pioneering overseas China scholars viewed Taiwan during the Cold War. In addition, the Institute of Modern History has published The Reminiscences of Ho Low-Tone and The Reminiscences of Lee Ching-Ping, which respectively present the first-hand recollections of significant figures in medical education and international diplomacy, providing valuable primary sources for the study of modern history.

On politics and war, Bringing the Truth to Light: Multifaceted Exploration of Political Cases in Post-war Taiwan examines the types, regions, and victim experiences of White Terror political cases in Taiwan. Attack and Defense in North China: Re-evaluating Chiang Kai-shek's Policy of "Internal Peace Before Foreign Resistance" (1932-1937) takes the era of ongoing domestic struggles in both China and Japan as its backdrop, focusing on the examination of Chiang Kai-shek’s stance in the North China conflicts and the principles that guided his choices between persistence and concession.

The Institute of Chinese Literature and Philosophy has released five monographs that provide in-depth comparisons of the content and distinctions in Confucianism and the Classics among China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. These include History of Interpretations of Mencius, Vol 1: An Explication of Mencius's Thought, New Edition; The Contemporaneity of Confucianism: Ecology, Politics, and Culture; East Asian Confucianism and Interpretations of the Classics: The Unfolding of Korean and Vietnamese Confucianism; Japanese Essays on Korean Confucianism; and Meiji and Taishō Era Approaches to the Classic of Poetry, thereby tracing the intellectual development of the East Asian cultural sphere. In addition, the publication of The Dongba Classics of the Nakhi Peoples: Complete Translation of Selected Volumes in the Collection of the Institute of History and Philology, Academia Sinica by the Institute of History and Philology enables the public to understand and appreciate the unique cultural significance of minority classics and rituals.

Confronting global issues such as AI and aging society, Academia Sinica Press has published Human Wisdom in the Age of AI, which encourages readers to become “wave-makers” in the AI era through three perspectives: concepts, ethics and law; creation, research and application; and large language models and generative AI. The Imagination of Community, the Imagined Community focuses on aging, chronic diseases, and related issues, proposing practical solutions for ideal community care services.

This year, Academia Sinica makes its appearance at the Frankfurt Book Fair, presenting diverse and forward-looking research achievements that highlight the depth and vitality of Taiwan’s scholarship. At the same time, it actively embraces emerging publishing trends and opens new avenues for global dialogue. During the fair, a curated selection of 15 publications will be presented at both the physical Taiwan Pavilion and the IP Meetup online platform. We warmly invite you to visit and explore Academia Sinica’s vibrant scholarship and multifaceted perspectives.
