The Frankfurt Book Fair is the largest international book fair in the world. Founded in 1949, it attracts tens of thousands of writers, publishing industry practitioners, cultural professionals, multimedia, and technology companies worldwide to discuss international book copyright issues annually. This year's book fair promotes the concept of "Translate. Transfer. Transform-Words connect worlds," and the theme country is Spain.

The Taiwan Creative Content Agency continued to set up a Taiwan Pavilion at the Book Fair this year to promote Taiwanese content products to the international copyright market and to establish links with relevant organizations in the global content industry.

This year's Taiwan Pavilion theme is "Beyond Books, Stories Ahead," emphasizing that stories can be translated and presented in different forms. The physical and virtual will be exhibited simultaneously. Three exhibition areas of "Asia Pavilion," "Comics Pavilion," and "ARTS+" will be set up on-site. An online Taiwan Pavilion will be launched as well.

Features 15 Academia Sinica Publications, which participated in the Exhibition of Taiwan Pavilion

Academia Sinica has outstanding research fellows, and the research results have been highly regarded and affirmed. The 15 academic publications exhibited at the Frankfurt Book Fair this year are all the latest publications in the past three years. From the microscopic to the macroscopic and the individual to the era, these demonstrate the care for aspects of history, diplomacy, culture, religion, literature, and law.

Humans are historical beings, not only living towards the future but also living toward the past. The exploration of one's history is an essential subject of academic research. Tears of a Taiwanese Soul (I) Memory of My Early Days: Oral History of Hsieh Hsueh-hung and Tears of a Taiwanese Soul (II) Reminiscences of Yang Ke-huang present Hsieh Hsueh-hung's biography, recording how a woman struggled with fate and how the founder of the Taiwan Communist Party confronted times in which both books are unique and precious historical materials.

In terms of Taiwan's history, many works cut into it from different angles, and the time series covered various periods. From Prehistory to History – The Cultural Traits of Eastern Taiwan re-examines the cultural connotation of the eastern half of Taiwan from the prehistoric era to the 17th century and fills in many missing links from the end of the Neolithic Age through the Metal Age to the beginning of history. From the perspective of the "East Asian Cultural Sphere (Tōa Hok-ló Bûn-hòa-khoan)," Between Mountains and Seas: Treatises on the Early Taiwan History in the Early Modern Period explores the diversity and richness of Taiwan's history through multiple cases such as historical toponymy, folklore and religion, and the history of Chinese immigration in Southeast Asia. Rethinking Japanese Colonial Rule from Taiwan and Korea is a transnational academic collaboration that discusses the colonial experience of Taiwan and North Korea and the impact of Japanese colonial rule from different levels of law, education, and society. After World War II, the two sides of the Taiwan Strait entered a state of division under the Cold War. Ideal and Disillusion: Chiang Kai-Shek's Diplomacy with the U.S., France and Japan in the 1960s macroscopically describes the loss of the Republic of China's permanent seat of the United Nations under the rule of Chiang Kai-shek and eventually evolved not to be recognized internationally.

In addition, The Emergence of New Socialities: transforming Social Life Among the Pinuyumayan in Taiwan and Taoist Revival and Contemporary Social Life: Memorial to Liu Chi-Wan are exhibited in the book fair. Present a new perspective on studying aborigines in Taiwan and Taoism in the Han local society.

East Asian and Sinology studies have always been the strengths of Taiwanese academic research on the world stage. This time we have selected the following- East Asian Confucianism and Interpretations of the Classics: The Unfolding of Korean and Vietnamese Confucianism, Gazing beyond the Mainstream: Revisiting Literary Writings of Other Kinds, Translation and Literature in Qing China, and The May Fourth Movement and Chinese Religion: Adjustment and Evolution.

The understanding of the past will undoubtedly deepen the interpretation of the contemporary. The three publications Constitutional Interpretation: Theory and Practice V. 11, Sino-American Relations, 2012-2016, and Reflections on COVID-19, focus on current issues and illustrate academic research on how they can intervene in reality and provide an opportunity for change.

Broaden the Horizon  Taiwan to the World

The mission of Academia Sinica is to conduct front-end basic research, and it is also a well-known center of Sinology. The 15 featured publications pose as the academic publication transcripts intra-Academia Sinica in recent years. It will be displayed in the "Publisher Zone" (Hall 6.0 C55) of the Asia Pavilion in the Taiwan Pavilion starting tomorrow. It can be browsed through the Taiwan Pavilion virtually, too.

The Frankfurt Book Fair is a world-renowned heavy-hitting publishing feast. Academia Sinica hopes to use it as a window for Taiwan's academic research to connect with others, demonstrate Taiwan's academic care and research capability to the world, and showcase Taiwan internationally!
