After a one-year hiatus, the 27th Pacific Neighborhood Consortium Annual Conference and Joint Meetings (PNC 2021) will return this year from September 28 to 30. The conference has specially invited renowned Buddhism scholar Lewis Lancaster, modern digital heritage advocate Halina Gottlieb, and Taiwan's Digital Minister Audrey Tang as its keynote speakers!
PNC 2021 will be hosted by Academia Sinica. The conference theme will be "Sustainable Digital Heritage." Due to the uncertainty of the global COVID-19 pandemic, the conference will be held through online videoconferencing for the first time this year. We call on scholars and experts from around the world to congregate virtually and together investigate how we can sustainably preserve cultural heritage and civilization in this age of digital sharing.
This year's conference will host three keynote speeches, featuring three world-class experts to discuss insights from their respective fields and the best methods of handling digital heritage preservation. Keynote speaker Lewis Lancaster is Professor Emeritus at the Department of East Asian Languages at the University of California, Berkeley, and founding director of the Electronic Cultural Atlas Initiative (ECAI). He will share his views in his keynote speech, "Preserving the Narrative." Dr. Lancaster is also one of the co-founders of PNC, lending special significance to his return for this year's address.
Halina Gottlieb, CEO at Digital Heritage Center Sweden and the founding director of Nordic Digital Excellence in Museums (NODEM), will present her keynote on "Designing for a Sustainable Future in Digital Heritage." She will discuss how museums, academia, and creative industries have responded to the challenges of digital heritage preservation, using her 20 years of experience in Sweden.
Audrey Tang, Digital Minister of Taiwan and a long-time advocate of open government and digital democracy, will deliver a keynote speech titled "Digital Social Innovation" to discuss how, although technologists look forward to the "singularity," we should remember that the "plurality" is already here.
Besides the keynotes, PNC 2021 will also hold its first roundtable discussion session, exploring issues of sustainability in digital cultural heritage and digital governance from perspectives of industry, government, and academia. The conference will also feature four special seminar sessions, three paper sessions, three poster sessions, and six ECAI workshops.
