Overview

The Research Museum of the Biodiversity Research Center, Academia Sinica (BRCAS) houses a wealth of biological specimens collected by generations of researchers of the institute. These precious biological collections are important research materials and the products of lifetimes of effort. The museum collects the curriculum vitae, collection history, specimen records, and field work of retired researchers, not only to provide a full biographic portrayal of their academic careers, but also to inspire and encourage younger generations.

Dr. Shao Kwang-tsao retired from BRCAS in August 2016 and was awarded a 'Special Service Medal' for his 40-year excellent service to Academia Sinica. He has continued to work tirelessly for the conservation of marine ecosystems. With an extraordinary publication record, Dr. Shao is an internationally renowned ichthyologist, ecologist, and evolutionary biologist known for his multidisciplinary research in marine biology. Dr. Shao was the recipient of the 1994-1995 Outstanding Research Award and 2011 Special Outstanding Talent Award of the National Science Council. At the same time, he has been an adjunct professor of several universities and supervised numerous master's and PhD students. In addition to research and teaching, he has served numerous roles in academia and government. Dr. Shao also pioneered promoting 'open data' and internationalization of Taiwan's marine biology. His dedication to science and academic service was manifested by his selection for the 29th 'Ten Outstanding Young Persons,' 32nd 'Ten Outstanding Agricultural Experts,' and the 2011 'Forestry and Nature Conservation Merit Award.’

This multi-year project aims to curate a series of online exhibitions on the Open Museum platform to illustrate Dr. Shao's academic career. We will compile a complete CV, digitizing early monographic works, photographs and videos of marine organisms, and field work, as well as activities and people associated with Dr. Shao. Through the various display modules of the Open Museum, Dr. Shao's remarkable academic career will be cherished and remembered.
